On 25 November 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš, held a conversation over the phone with the Polish Minister for the European Union (EU), Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk, whom he invited to seek a solution to the situation on the Polish-Ukrainian border, where there are long queues due to protests by farmers. The Latvian Foreign Minister conveyed Latvia’s readiness to be involved and provide assistance in seeking solutions to the situation.
Both Ministers also discussed the upcoming decision to be taken by the European Council regarding the start of the EU accession negotiations with Ukraine. The Latvian Foreign Minister reiterated Latvia’s firm support for Ukraine, noting that Ukraine belongs to Europe, therefore Latvia supports starting the EU accession talks with Ukraine already this year.
The Ministers also discussed cooperation between Latvia and Poland within the EU, and the future development of the EU.
