From 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024, Latvia will be chairing the work of National Coordinators of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region (EUSBSR). During that period, Latvia will organise, set the agenda, and chair the meetings of National Coordinators.

One of the key events during the chairmanship period will be the Annual Forum of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, “Safe and Sustainable Baltic Sea Region for Future Generations”, to be held in Riga on 4 and 5 October. The forum will focus on green energy, climate affairs, and youth engagement.

The event is organised jointly by the Riga City Council, the Union of the Baltic Cities and the Vision and Strategies around the Baltic Sea (VASAB), in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.

Since 2010, the forum has been the most visible EUSBSR event involving officials from the region’s countries, experts, academics, representatives from central and local government authorities and NGOs in a discussion on topics of importance for the prosperity of the region with a view to carrying out projects relevant to the region in mutual cooperation.

Background information

The EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, the first macro-regional strategy in the European Union, is based on an innovative and integrated long-term approach to the implementation of EU policies in the Baltic Sea region. The strategy comprises eight countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden.

In 2012, three objectives were defined for the EUSBSR: Save the SeaConnect the Region; and Increase Prosperity. The implementation of the strategy is based on the Action Plan.
