It is exactly one hundred years to the day, 10 February 1921, when Iran recognised Latvia de iure. To commemorate this event, the Iranian flag will be raised in front of the Latvian Foreign Ministry. On 15 January 1929, Latvia and Iran signed a treaty of friendship signifying also the opening of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Iran was amongst the countries which never recognised Latvia’s incorporation into the USSR, and Iran recognised the renewal of Latvia’s independence on 10 September 1991. Diplomatic relations between Latvia and Iran were renewed on 7 July 1992 upon the signing of a joint declaration on the establishment of diplomatic relations.
