110 years ago, on 21 February 1914, a bank and apartment building commissioned by the Riga Mortgage Society was inaugurated in the heart of the city.

This building was home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1919 until 1940, when Latvia was occupied and lost its independence de facto. Having initially rented premises from the Riga Mortgage Society, the ministry become the owner of the house in 1923.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs returned to its historical venue in 2007 after reconstruction and restoration.

The building has witnessed many landmark events in Latvia’s history. And it is here that national foreign policy ideas are born and evolve today.
