On 8 August 2024, the acting State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons, met with the Ambassador designate of the Federal Republic of Germany, Gudrun Masloch. The two officials welcomed the close and active political dialogue between Latvia and Germany and their cooperation in the security sector, economy, education and culture.
Andžejs Viļumsons thanked Germany for its contribution to the security of the Baltic Sea region through its leadership of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence battlegroup in Lithuania and air policing in Lielvārde. Gudrun Masloch underlined that security cooperation is one of her priorities in future work.
Germany being one of the most important trading partners to Latvia, Andžejs Viļumsons confirmed Latvia’s interest in developing new cooperation opportunities and attracting investments. In the context of cooperation in education and culture, the two diplomats expressed the need to further expand the teaching and learning of the German language in Latvia.
On 13 August, Gudrun Masloch will submit her letter of credence to the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs. Gudrun Masloch has previously served at the German Embassy in Latvia as well as the German Embassy in North Macedonia and the Permanent Representation to the United Nations. At the German Federal Foreign Office, she has worked with matters related to the EU, the UN, the Middle East and Africa.
