On 28 November 2024, in Paris, France, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to OECD and UNESCO, Andris Pelšs, presented letters of credence to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

During the meeting, the Ambassador emphasized that Latvia has been an active and responsible UNESCO member for thirty-three years, with valuable expertise in the protection of cultural heritage, in the field of communication and information, in education and science, as well as in other UNESCO programmes.

Andris Pelšs praised the previous support of UNESCO to Ukraine, underlined Latvia’s active participation in the UNESCO’s Group of Friends of Ukraine and noted the need to continue condemning Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine and the occupation of Crimea.

As he informed the Director-General about Latvia’s activities in the near future, the Ambassador highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Latvia, especially noting Latvia’s role in leading the MONDIACULT 2025 regional consultations. This UNESCO meeting on December 12 will be chaired by the Latvian Minister of Culture, Agnese Lāce.

Discussing other important cooperation issues between Latvia and UNESCO, Andris Pelšs noted Latvia’s positive visibility and active work in UNESCO sectors of media freedom, safety of journalists, media literacy by providing its expertise, and confirmed readiness to continue this by actively working in the UNESCO International Program for the Development of Communication.
