On 25 September 2024, in Cairo, Egypt, the Latvian Embassy in Egypt welcomed the Ambassadors and embassy representatives of African countries to an event introducing Latvia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council.
The Ambassadors and diplomats from the embassies of 12 African countries were given a presentation on the main objectives and thematic priorities of Latvia’s candidacy for the UNSC. The presentation by the Ambassador of Latvia to Egypt, Andris Razāns, was followed by an informal discussion and exchange of views on issues of importance to African countries which are in line with the objectives and priorities set by Latvia while standing as a candidate for an elected member’s seat on the UNSC for the period of 2026–2027.
Egypt’s Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Relations and International Security, Ambassador Amr Algoweilly, also honoured the meeting with his presence.
The event was implemented as part of the public diplomacy programme in support of the lobby campaign of Latvia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council. The campaign under the motto of “Together for peace and resilience” aims at ensuring successful election of Latvia to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term in the 2025 election, at which Latvia is running for an elected member’s seat for the first time. Membership of the UNSC will be a key instrument in pursuit and protection of Latvia’s foreign policy interests, as well as making it possible for Latvia to expand the scale of its international cooperation and thereby contributing to world peace and resilience.
