On 4 December 2024 in Stockholm, at the Latvian Embassy in Sweden, the Ambassador-at-Large for Global and Multilateral Affairs, Andrejs Pildegovičs, met with non-resident ambassadors accredited to Latvia to discuss regional and global security issues, including the decreasing of Russia’s threats, provision of support to Ukraine, as well as developments in the Middle East.
Andrejs Pildegovičs introduced the ambassadors to the priorities of Latvia’s candidacy campaign for the 2025 election to the UN Security Council and highlighted the role of the UNSC elected members in the current climate of global geopolitical tensions and emerging security challenges.
In the context of the new security challenges, cyber policy issues were discussed in a meeting with the Special Envoy for International Cyber Issues at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrés Jato, and ambassadors from the Friends of Multilateralism Group.
More than 30 foreign ambassadors accredited to Latvia reside in Sweden. The Friends of Multilateralism Group brings together the Ambassadors of Argentina, Canada, Egypt, Guatemala, Indonesia, New Zealand, Morocco, Mexico, and Portugal.
As part of his visit, Andrejs Pildegovičs also met with former Chair of the Board of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), former UN Deputy Secretary General, Jan Eliasson, for a discussion on the role and effectiveness of the UN in strengthening international peace and security.
The visit was implemented as part of the public diplomacy programme in support of the lobby campaign of Latvia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council.
The campaign under the motto of “Together for peace and resilience” aims at ensuring successful election of Latvia to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term in the 2025 election, at which Latvia is running for an elected member’s seat for the first time.
Membership of the UNSC will be a key instrument in pursuit and protection of Latvia’s foreign policy interests, as well as making it possible for Latvia to expand the scale of its international cooperation and thereby contributing to world peace and resilience.
