On 10 and 11 October 2024, the Ambassador-at-Large for Global and Multilateral Affairs, Andrejs Pildegovičs, was on a working visit in Washington, D.C. During his visit, the Ambassador met with the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, Michele Sison, Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro, the Executive Director of the Nordic-Baltic Constituency on the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Vitas Vasiliauskas, the Nordic-Baltic Executive Director at the Executive Board of the World Bank Group, Sigrún Rawet, and with a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), Dalibor Roháč.

In a conversation with Assistant Secretary of State Michele Sison, the Ambassador-at-Large commended the close dialogue with the United States and underlined the importance of transatlantic cooperation in addressing global challenges, including by provision of maximum support to Ukraine, as well as joining efforts to rein in Russia in the long-term. The officials also exchanged views on opportunities for cooperation in international organizations. The Ambassador-at-Large emphasised the need to strengthen multilateralism and to reform global governance institutions, including the United Nations, in line with today’s challenges and needs.

In a conversation with Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), the officials discussed the cooperation of Latvia and the European Union with the Latin America and the Caribbean region. Andrejs Pildegovičs highlighted the role of the OAS in protecting the rules-based international order, underscoring in particular the organization’s hard-line stance in condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine, and he thanked the OAS for its swift decision to suspend Russia’s observer status in the organization.

The discussion with Dalibor Roháč, a researcher at the American Enterprise Institute, addressed topics on the global agenda, America’s position, and possible solutions to overcome global governance problems and challenges to the international rule-based order.
