On 24 October 2023 in Baku, the Ambassador of Latvia to Azerbaijan, Edgars Skuja, submitted his letter of credence to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.
During his accreditation visit, the Ambassador confirmed that he would continue to develop friendly bilateral relations and economic cooperation, provide support to Latvian businessmen, and promote Latvian exports to Azerbaijan. In their conversation, the officials also addressed the successful cooperation between Latvia and Azerbaijan in the international arena, as well as cooperation between the European Union and Azerbaijan. Ambassador Skuja underlined that from 2021 onwards, the Latvian mission had also served as a NATO Contact Point Embassy and contributed to the strengthening of NATO’s partnership with Azerbaijan.
The Ambassador reiterated an invitation from the President of Latvia to President Aliyev to make a response visit to Latvia, as well as thanking Azerbaijan for its support for Latvia’s candidacy to a seat of a non-permanent member in the UN Security Council elections in 2025 for the 2026–2027 term.
Latvia and Azerbaijan will mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations in 2024. Since 2017, Latvia and Azerbaijan have been linked by a strategic partnership.
The previous Latvian Ambassador to Azerbaijan was Dainis Garančs. The Embassy of Latvia in Azerbaijan was opened in 2006.
