On 18 November 2024, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Latvia to the United Nations in New York hosted an event in honor of the 106th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia, while also highlighting Latvia’s candidacy campaign for membership of the UN Security Council. The event was attended by over 200 Permanent Representatives and Deputy Permanent Representatives of UN member states representing all the regions of the world, along with UN officials and the mission’s cooperation partners.
The Latvian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes, addressed the attendees, emphasized Latvia’s journey in preserving its statehood and restoring independence. She underlined the importance of the UN and other international organizations in this process. The Ambassador also outlined Latvia’s priorities for its Security Council candidacy and reaffirmed Latvia’s commitment to promoting international peace and security. Latvia is convinced that the opinion of every country, large or small, counts and deserves to be represented. Latvia will use its voice in the Security Council to protect the values and principles enshrined in the UN Charter. Latvia will stand up steadfastly for international law, human rights, fundamental freedoms and justice.
“Upon restoring its independence, Latvia received invaluable support from the international community. Now it is our turn to contribute, sharing our experience and expertise. Latvia is a responsible and reliable partner. We are committed to engaging constructively, openly and inclusively in the work of the Security Council. Latvia will seek to make the Security Council more representative, transparent and effective,” said Ambassador Sanita Pavļuta-Deslandes.
Guests were offered information material about Latvia’s UN Security Council candidacy, and videos about Latvia were displayed throughout the event.
The event featured a dynamic performance by a Latvian music group, DAGAMBA, which blends classical music elements with modern genres.
The event was implemented as part of the public diplomacy programme in support of the lobby campaign of Latvia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council. The campaign under the motto of “Together for peace and resilience” aims at ensuring successful election of Latvia to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term in the 2025 election, at which Latvia is running for an elected member’s seat for the first time. Membership of the UNSC will be a key instrument in pursuit and protection of Latvia’s foreign policy interests, as well as making it possible for Latvia to expand the scale of its international cooperation and thereby contributing to world peace and resilience.
