On 12 December 2024 in Warsaw, at the Embassy of Latvia in Poland, the Ambassador-at-Large for Global and Multilateral Affairs, Andrejs Pildegovičs, met with non-resident ambassadors accredited to Latvia to discuss regional and global security issues, including the ways of decreasing Russia’s threats, provision of support to Ukraine, as well as developments in the Middle East.

Andrejs Pildegovičs introduced the ambassadors to the priorities of Latvia’s candidacy campaign for the 2025 election to the UN Security Council and highlighted the role of the UNSC elected members in the current climate of global geopolitical tensions and emerging security challenges.

In a conversation with the Deputy Political Director of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Robert Kupiecki, and the Director for Global Affairs, Paweł Radomski, the topics discussed were cooperation between Latvia and Poland in multilateral formats and their support for Ukraine, the global agenda of the UN, as well as Latvia’s candidacy to the UN Security Council.

The visit was implemented as part of the public diplomacy programme in support of the lobby campaign of Latvia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council.

The campaign under the motto of “Together for peace and resilience” aims at ensuring successful election of Latvia to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term in the 2025 election, at which Latvia is running for an elected member’s seat for the first time.

Membership of the UNSC will be a key instrument in pursuit and protection of Latvia’s foreign policy interests, as well as making it possible for Latvia to expand the scale of its international cooperation and thereby contributing to world peace and resilience.
