The Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia are pleased to announce the contest for the annual Latvian and Estonian Language Promotion Award (Languages Award). In accordance with the Award Regulations, a translation, a piece of research, or a Latvian language teacher in Estonia or an Estonian language teacher in Latvia can be nominated to receive the Languages Award for the promotion of the Latvian and Estonian languages in the year 2019. The winner will be announced by the Latvian and Estonian Foreign Ministers.
The aim of the Languages Award is to enhance the knowledge of the Latvian and Estonian languages and to recognize the achievements of Latvian and Estonian translators, linguists and teachers in the promotion of the Latvian and Estonian languages. The Languages Award also contributes to strengthening Latvian and Estonian cultural cooperation and this year it will be awarded for the eleventh time.
The monetary value of the Award is 3,000 euros and the Award Fund receives equal contributions from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia. The Jury of the Award consists of representatives from the Latvian and Estonian Ministries of Foreign Affairs as well as language and literature experts from both countries.
In previous years, the award has been granted to Maima Grīnberga (2009, 2012), Guntars Godiņš (2010, 2013, 2018), Kalev Kalkun (2011), Margus Konnula alias Contra (2014), Valts Ernštreits (2015), Livia Viitol (2016) and Rūta Karma (2017).
Award candidates for 2019 can be nominated until 15 May 2020. The contest application and the Curriculum Vitae of the nominee can be submitted by e-mail to mfa.cha@mfa.gov.lv or by post to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, K. Valdemāra iela 3, Rīga, LV-1395 with reference to “Languages Award”.
