On Friday, 14 February 2025, at the Munich Security Conference, the ministers of foreign affairs of the Baltic states and Nordic countries and met with the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, reaffirming their unwavering long-term support for Ukraine, its sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Baiba Braže, emphasized in the discussion that the priority now is to strengthen Ukraine’s position as much as possible both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table. She underlined that any peace talks regarding Ukraine, which will inevitably impact security across Europe, must include full participation by both Ukraine and Europe. Any peace process must be aimed at achieving a just and sustainable peace based on terms acceptable to Ukraine.
“Europe is Ukraine’s biggest supporter, especially the Baltic states and Nordic countries (NB8), which are providing the second largest military assistance to Ukraine from among all partners,” Baiba Braže stated.
At the same time, she pointed out that European countries must rapidly increase their investments in security and defence to strengthen deterrence against the aggressor. “Russia is a problem for all of us. Russia will not stop on its own. At present, there are no indications that Russia seeks peace – last night, it attacked the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and not a single night or day has passed without Russia’s targeted attacks on Ukraine. This is a decisive moment for crucial decisions, and European countries must take a more active role in leading these processes,” Braže noted.
The Minister also emphasized that all her meetings and public appearances in Munich are focused on supporting Ukraine, which is fighting for its independence and our security.
