On 16 December 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, will take part in a meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

The meeting will focus on a discussion on constraining of Russia and the EU’s further support to Ukraine, especially EU sanctions against Russia. The ministers are expected to approve the 15th package of sanctions against Russia to be adopted at the European Council on 19–20 December.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže: The new package of EU sanctions against Russia has been prepared through much work, with colleagues from Latvia, the Baltic States, Nordic countries and other countries working together. It targets both shadow vessels and individuals and companies who have helped Russia, circumvented sanctions and enabled Russian aggression.

To provide updates on the current situation and acute needs on the ground, EU foreign ministers will be addressed via videoconference by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha.

The agenda also includes a discussion on developments in the Middle East and Syria. The Ministers will also exchange views on the EU’s further relations with Georgia.

The Foreign Affairs Council deals with matters relating to EU external action, including the common foreign and security policy, the European security and defence policy, external trade and development cooperation. The Council’s main role is to ensure the unity, consistency and effectiveness of the EU’s external action.
