On 27 January 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, will take part in a meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Belgium.

The agenda of the meeting will focus on further EU support to Ukraine, work on the 16th round of EU sanctions against Russia, and cooperation with the new United States Administration.

EU foreign ministers will have an exchange of views with the leader of the Belarusian democratic forces, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, following the so-called “presidential election” on 26 January. They will also discuss prevention of hybrid threats. 

Ministers intend to discuss the situation in the Middle East and the ceasefire agreement reached.

The Foreign Affairs Council deals with matters relating to EU external action, including the common foreign and security policy, the European security and defence policy, external trade, and development cooperation. The Council’s main task is to ensure the unity, consistency and effectiveness of the EU’s external action.
