On 3-4 December 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, will attend a Meeting of NATO Foreign Affairs Ministers in Brussels, Belgium. The focus of the ministerial discussions will be NATO’s long-term support to Ukraine, NATO’s approach to constraining Russia, and the engagement of the Alliance with its southern neighbourhood.
This will be the first meeting of NATO Foreign Affairs Ministers to be chaired by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who took office this past 1 October.
As part of the meeting, the NATO-Ukraine Council will be held at which the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, will provide information on the state of play in the war, and on military support urgently needed by Ukraine. At the NATO-Ukraine Council, the Allies will exchange views on further support to Ukraine.
Ministers also intend to discuss political, economic and security reforms in Ukraine, which strengthen Ukraine’s resilience while bringing the country closer to NATO membership.
The NATO-Ukraine Council meeting will also be attended by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, with the aim of promoting closer and more coherent cooperation between NATO and the EU in providing support to Ukraine.
NATO’s Foreign Affairs Ministers will discuss constraining of Russia to restrict its ability to pose threat to Euro-Atlantic security.
Ministers will also exchange views on strengthening cooperation with partners in the southern neighbourhood. Invited to join the discussion is His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan, who has been a close partner of NATO. It will be a valuable opportunity for ministers to hear Jordan’s perspective of the security situation in the Middle East.
