On 28 November 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held the annual meeting of the directors of departments responsible for the United Nations affairs in the Nordic countries and Baltic States (Nordic-Baltic Eight, NB8) to exchange views on recent developments and closer coordination in the field of multilateral cooperation.
Based on current successful cooperation among the NB8, the discussions focused on the joint efforts within the framework of international organisations to counter the Russian aggression against Ukraine. The topics discussed included the NB8 priorities at the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, as well as preparations for the UN Summit of the Future in 2024.
Representatives from the NB8 countries were introduced to the main aspects of Latvia’s candidacy campaign for the 2025 elections to the UN Security Council.
In 2023, NB8 cooperation is co-ordinated by Latvia, placing a priority emphasis on strengthening of the rules-based international order, military security, deterrence, and resilience. In international organisations, including the UN, the NB8 countries also cooperate on a regular basis in promoting common objectives and priorities.
