On 14 January 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia adopted a draft order on the posting of a civilian expert, Ilvars Dreimanis, to the European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) as from 15 March 2025.
Ilvars Dreimanis is the first Latvian civilian expert approved for EUAM Iraq, and he will assume the duties of Senior Strategic Adviser on Border Management.
EUAM Iraq comprises 70 civilian experts from 19 Member States.
The EU civilian missions are part of the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). Thirteen EU civilian missions are currently active in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Latvia continues its participation in EU civilian missions thereby contributing to strengthening of peace and international security.
Candidates for EU missions are selected by the European External Action Service (EEAS). The participation of civilian experts posted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in international missions and operations is set out in the Cabinet Regulations No. 598 of 22 September 2020, “Procedures for sending a civilian expert for participation in an international mission or operation”.
