In the run-up to the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of European Union Affairs of Hungary, Barna Pál Zsigmond, visited Riga.
The State Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, commended the regular bilateral dialogue between Latvia and Hungary, as well as thanking Hungary for its support to NATO’s deterrence and defence measures in the Baltic region and participation in the Baltic Air Policing mission. Andris Pelšs underlined the need to continue providing comprehensive support to Ukraine in its fight against the Russian aggression. In a discussion about the security situation in the region and hybrid threats, the State Secretary emphasized that the strengthening of security at the eastern border is an invariably high priority for Latvia.
In a meeting with the Under Secretary for European Affairs, Ingrīda Levrence, the officials exchanged views about current topics on the European Union’s agenda. Ingrīda Levrence pointed out that Latvia’s interests in the second half of 2024 will be focused on Ukraine, the strengthening of economy, as well as the enlargement and adaptation of the EU.
Hungary will hold the EU Presidency in the second half of 2024, from 1 July to 31 December 2024.
