On 11 December 2024 in Riga, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dace Melbārde, met with the Director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, located in Venice, Magdalena Landry, and her team. Their visit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a confirmation of the importance of inter-sectoral dialogue, while also highlighting the commitment to strengthening the role of culture in the promotion of sustainable development.
The officials discussed the strengthening of cooperation between Latvia and UNESCO in the areas of preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, promotion of scientific research and sustainable development, highlighting the ethical dimension of new technologies and artificial intelligence, and the protection of the media and journalists.
Another topic discussed was the course of MONDIACULT 2025 regional consultations for Eastern Europe countries, which Latvia has undertaken to lead. The consultations will take place on 12 December, and will be chaired by the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Latvia, Agnese Lāce. The consultations will formulate the views of our region on several important issues, including how to promote the inclusion of culture as a separate goal in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals after 2030.
