On 15 October 2024, Dace Melbārde, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will attend a meeting of the General Affairs Council of the European Union in Luxembourg.
At the meeting, the representatives of Member States will make preparations for the European Council meeting on 17–18 October. The officials will have an exchange of views on fostering Jewish life and combating antisemitism, in light of escalation in the Middle East and the rise of antisemitism after 7 October 2023. A discussion will also be held on relations between the EU and Switzerland.
To conclude the 2024 European Semester cycle, the Council is expected to approve country-specific recommendations to EU Member States, including Latvia, on their economic, social, employment, structural, and financial policies.
The General Affairs Council examines matters concerning more than one EU policy, such as negotiations on EU enlargement, preparations for the European Council, the development of the EU’s multi-annual budgetary perspective, as well as the rule of law, institutional and administrative topics.
