On 13 December 2023, Riga Graduate School of Law hosted the final ceremony for the 15th winter session of the Intensive Programme in European Law and Economics run by (RGSL). The Under Secretary of State for Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ivita Burmistre, presented certificates to 25 trainees from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Moldova, North Macedonia, Palestine, Serbia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
The objective of the programme is to promote knowledge and understanding among the employees of public administration authorities in partner countries regarding the legal, political and economic functioning of the European Union, as well as to share the experience of Latvia as an EU Member State. Under Secretary Burmistre called on the participants to use the acquired knowledge for the development of their countries and to develop closer relations with Latvia and the EU.
The Intensive Programme is held in Riga with in-person attendance. The curriculum includes a study visit to Brussels for meetings with officials at the EU institutions.
Background information
The Intensive Programme in European Law and Economics for the countries of the EU Neighbourhood Policy, Central Asia and the Western Balkans is a six-week interdisciplinary curriculum providing insights into the legal, political and economic functioning of the European Union.
The programme, running for ten years already, is the longest-supported development cooperation project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since 2014, a total of 672 participants from 20 partner countries and territories have graduated from the programmes in European law and economics implemented by RGSL. The six-week programme is jointly financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from its development cooperation policy budget and by the United States.
