On 16 May 2023, during the 4th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe (CoE), in Reykjavík, Iceland, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Carmen Moreno Toscano, for a discussion on the strengthening of Mexico’s presence in the CoE.
During the meeting, Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed Latvia’s interest in dynamizing the political dialogue with Mexico and invited its diplomats to the next round of bilateral political consultations in Riga.
“Given that Latvia will chair the work of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for the next six months, we are interested in cooperating with Mexico as an observer country within this framework. Russia’s accountability for its crimes committed in Ukraine and against Ukraine will be one of the most important items on the agenda during our Presidency. Latvia relies on Mexico’s support to address this issue. And the first practical step is the establishment of the Register of Damage negotiated within the Council of Europe. Latvia is among its founding members, and we also invite Mexico to join it,” Edgars Rinkēvičs said.
The Minister thanked Mexico for voting in favour of the United Nations (UN) resolutions supporting Ukraine and its territorial integrity. The votes at the UN General Assembly clearly demonstrate strong international support to Ukraine and condemnation of Russia’s military aggression.
