On 20 September 2022, in New York, during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia, Bujar Osmani, for a discussion on the bilateral relations between the two countries, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and cooperation in international organisations.
The Latvian Foreign Minister praised the good and friendly relations with North Macedonia and he congratulated North Macedonia on launching accession negotiations with the European Union.
Edgars Rinkēvičs thanked North Macedonia for joining NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence battle group in Latvia thus contributing to security in the Baltic States region and across the Alliance.
In a discussion on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Edgars Rinkēvičs underlined that Russia should assume full legal and financial responsibility for the crime of aggression and war crimes in Ukraine.
The Latvian Foreign Minister pointed out that, for the first time, Latvia was standing as a candidate in the 2025 election to the United Nations Security Council for the term of 2026–2027.
