On 16 April, 2024, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, attended the informal extraordinary video conference of the European Union Ministers of Foreign Affairs. The meeting addressed the situation in the Middle East, where Iran launched a large-scale attack on Israel this past weekend.
During the meeting, the ministers condemned Iran’s attack in the strongest terms and expressed solidarity with Israel. The need was highlighted to prevent the deterioration of the security situation in the region. The EU’s unity and close coordination with regional and global partners are of high importance.
At the same time, Andris Pelšs called for Russia’s war against Ukraine not to be forgotten: “We must not lose our focus on Ukraine. We must continue to provide all the support it needs in its fight against the Russian aggression.”
The informal video conference of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs took place at the initiative of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in response to Iran’s attack on Israel.
