On 12 January 2024, in Riga, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš, met with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.
The Foreign Minister thanked the President of the European Parliament for her strong support for Ukraine and its aspirations of integration into the European Union. Referring to the historic decision by the European Council of 14 December 2023 on the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, the officials agreed that concrete steps should be taken as soon as possible to approve the framework for accession negotiations and to convene an Intergovernmental Conference.
The officials also discussed preparations for the election to the European Parliament, which will be held in Latvia on 8 June 2024.
Roberta Metsola is making working visits to the European Union Member States, including Latvia, to call on audiences, especially young people, to actively exercise their democratic rights of participation in the election and get involved in shaping the EU’s future.
