On 10 and 11 October 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, will be on a working visit in Geneva, Switzerland, and meet with the Federal Councillor, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, Ignazio Cassis. The Minister will also take part in the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipation Summit (GESDA).
Switzerland is a trusted partner in bilateral cooperation. Switzerland is holding a seat on the United Nations Security Council for the current term of 2023–2024. On 15–16 June, Switzerland hosted the first Summit on Peace in Ukraine – Switzerland organised the event at Ukraine’s request.
In a bilateral meeting with the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Ignazio Cassis, Foreign Minister Baiba Braže will exchange views on cooperation between the two countries, topics on the international agenda, and Switzerland’s experience as a member of the UN Security Council.
Baiba Braže will participate in a high-level political segment with delegates from Switzerland, India, Poland and El Salvador on democratising science literacy. This year’s summit seeks to analyse the impact and role of achievements in science and technology on diplomacy, business and society.
Candidacy of Latvia for the UN Security Council (2026–2027)
Latvia is standing as candidate for the UN Security Council for the term of 2026–2027. The objective is to keep the focus of the UN Security Council on the issues of highest importance to our region – supporting Ukraine, strengthening international law, eradicating sexual violence in conflicts, cybersecurity, AI, and countering disinformation. Latvia is doing its utmost to restrict the election of Russian and Belarusian representatives to UN bodies and forums. The UN Security Council has 15 members, five of them being permanent members of the Council.
