On 27 March 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš, met with the Chair of the NATO Military Committee (CMC), Lieutenant Admiral Rob Bauer, for a discussion on NATO deterrence and defence matters in preparations for the NATO summit in Washington.

At the meeting, Krišjānis Kariņš pointed out that Latvia’s priorities were investment in national defence capabilities and increasing NATO’s presence in our region. Active work is underway on the strengthening of NATO enhanced Forward Presence battle group, improving air defences and developing the Sēlija military training grounds. The exchange of views addressed the state of affairs in Ukraine, and the need was underlined for providing all kinds of support to Ukraine in order to ensure its victory in the war against Russia.

Rob Bauer has held the post of the Chair of the NATO Military Committee since June 2021. He served as the Chief of Defence of the Armed Forces of the Netherlands from 2017 to 2021, and has participated as a ship command officer in several anti-terrorist operations in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean.
