On 2 July 2021, the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, shall be meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Toshimitsu Motegi, who arrives in Latvia on a historic visit, with this year representing the centenary since Japan recognised Latvia de jure. The officials will discuss the latest international developments, the relations between the EU and Japan, as well as bilateral cooperation.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister of Japan is also to meet with the Prime Minister of Latvia, Krišjānis Kariņš, as well as laying flowers at the Freedom Monument and a joint tree planting ceremony by the two Foreign Ministers to commemorate the centenary of friendship between Latvia and Japan.
