On 14 March 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš, as part of his visit to the United Kingdom, met with Nusrat Ghani, Minister of State at the Department for Business and Trade, whose responsibilities include Ukraine reconstruction.
The meeting addressed the involvement of Latvia and the United Kingdom in the reconstruction of Ukraine and the possibilities for further cooperation in order to provide Ukraine with what the country need. Latvia is committed to long-term engagement, and since the mid-2022 it has been one of the first to implement reconstruction projects in Ukraine, primarily in the Chernihiv region. For instance, a Latvian non-governmental organisation, Centre MARTA, which works on the advocacy of women’s rights, has opened two support centres for women there.
2024 is a crucial year that will require all the resolve of Ukraine’s partners to strengthen Ukraine’s resilience so that it can win the war. The Drone Coalition led by Latvia and the UK is also providing its contribution, and cooperation opportunities are available in the field of research on 5G solutions. Latvia will retain its focus on the reconstruction of Ukraine’s social infrastructure, psychological support to women, digitalisation, and promotion of Ukraine’s European integration.
