On 18 September 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš, took part in the informal meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Ministers in New York, starting on the High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting held an exchange of views on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as well as the situation in the Sahel and its impact on the wider region.
The discussion focused in particular on the EU’s wide-ranging long-term support to Ukraine, including the ability to deliver support to the Ukrainian armed forces rapidly and to the necessary extent. Foreign Minister Kariņš underlined the need to agree on a sustainable financing solution for assistance to Ukraine under the European Peace facility.
The meeting voiced a massive support for the EU’s closer cooperation with global partners to explain the reasons behind the global consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine and to promote assistance to Ukraine. A number of bilateral meetings with African, Latin American and the Asian-Pacific countries are planned to contribute to that end.
