On 19 September 2022, in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the President of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Csaba Kőrösi, to pledge Latvia’s strong support for multilateralism and United Nations efforts in response to global challenges, especially in relation to the impact on the international order by Russia’s war against Ukraine.
During the meeting, Edgars Rinkēvičs congratulated Csaba Kőrösi on being elected to the post and expressed support for the priorities set by the President. The Minister reaffirmed that multilateral cooperation was essential for safeguarding the international order and addressing global challenges.
The Minister said he was convinced that the international community, including the United Nations, should continue helping Ukraine in every possible way as long as it takes. Latvia is participating in international mechanisms that document and investigate the crimes perpetrated by Russia, Edgars Rinkēvičs said, emphasising that the issue of Russia’s responsibility should also be considered at the United Nations.
Latvia is actively involved in the work of the General Assembly and the United Nations bodies on the matters of the war waged by Russia in Ukraine and Russia’s responsibility, fighting disinformation, media literacy, and digital cooperation, Edgars Rinkēvičs noted.
The officials also exchanged views on the involvement of youth in the United Nations processes.
