Grenada

On 22 September 2021, during the high-level week of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, had a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Grenada, Peter David.

Edgars Rinkēvičs spoke with appreciation of the current cooperation, which mainly takes place in the format of international organisations and the European Union (EU)–the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) relations. However, Latvia is ready to seek new touchpoints and developing cooperation on digitalisation, climate policy and the green economy sector.

Foreign Minister Rinkēvičs spoke about Latvia’s achievements in the field of climate policy and digitalisation. Successful digital solutions have been developed in Latvia – automated translation tools, online work platforms, underwater drones, and digital applications in the medical sector. The COVID-19 pandemic has served as a catalyser for digital solutions, the Foreign Minister noted, adding that Latvia would gladly share its experience and cooperate with the Caribbean countries in that area. Foreign Minister David confirmed that Grenada, which is feeling the negative consequences of climate change and is implementing digitalisation in public services, was interested in such expertise. The Foreign Ministers were in agreement that it would be useful to organise political consultations in that context.

During the meeting, the two Ministers of Foreign Affairs also discussed cooperation in international organisations, latest developments in international politics, and the overcoming of consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
