On 11 December 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a meeting of the Foreign Policy Experts Council with participation of Andžejs Viļumsons, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting took place under the chairmanship of Dr. Kārlis Bukovskis, Director of the Latvian Foreign Policy Institute and Associate Professor at Riga Stradiņš University.

The participants discussed the most important developments related to foreign policy in 2024, the work accomplished by Latvia and plans for next year. The exchange of views provided a valuable input to the Foreign Affairs Minister’s Annual Report on accomplishments and further work with respect to national foreign policy and the European Union.

This was the second meeting of the Foreign Policy Experts Council in its new composition. 

About the Foreign Policy Experts Council

The Foreign Policy Experts Council has been established to implement a uniform and successful foreign policy and to inform the public regarding foreign policy matters.

The Chair of the Council is Dr. Kārlis Bukovskis, Director of the Latvian Foreign Policy Institute and Associate Professor at Riga Stradiņš University. The members of the Foreign Policy Experts Council are: (1) Dr. Māris Andžāns, Director of the Center for Geopolitical Studies Riga  association, Associated Professor at Riga Stradiņš University; (2) Dr. Una Aleksandra Čerenkova-Bērziņa, Head of the China Studies Centre at Riga Stradiņš University; (3) Māris Cepurītis, Director of the Centre for East European Policy Studies; (4) Ernests Jenavs, Chairman of the Board at the Latvian Startup Association; (5) Kaspars Pollaks, Head of Business Area Defence and Public Safety at LMT; (6) Dr. Toms Rostoks, Director of the National Defence Academy of Latvia, Associated Professor at the University of Latvia; (7) Andris Strazds, Head of General Secretariat at Latvijas Banka; (8) Sigita Struberga, Secretary General at the Latvian Transatlantic Organisation, LATO; and (9) Inese Vaivare, Director of the Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation association.

The experts are working on the Council on a voluntary basis and without remuneration.

On 25 October 2024, the Council met for the first time in its new composition.
