On 14 July 2020, the Cabinet approved Latvia’s first National Action Plan on the Implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security in Latvia for the term of 2020-2025 (hereinafter – the Plan). The Plan was drafted under the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Plan envisages three main tasks: (1) raising public awareness of gender equality issues and the elimination of gender-based violence, especially in the younger generation; (2) training for the defence and home affairs sector, including the establishment of a gender adviser’s position; and (3) transfer of Latvia’s experience and knowledge.
The tasks will be implemented in cooperation with the line ministries and non-governmental organizations. Training on gender equality and elimination of gender-based violence in the Latvian defence and home affairs sector will involve cooperation with Canada and the Nordic countries which have expertise and knowledge on gender equality issues gathered over many years.
