On 5 December 2024, an Honorary Consulate of Latvia was opened in Nagoya, the capital of Japan’s Aichi Prefecture. Motoyuki Amano, the owner of a biotechnology company Amano Enzyme, has been appointed as Latvia’s Honorary Consul in Nagoya.
The work priorities for the Honorary Consulate are raising the visibility of Latvia, and support for Latvian businessmen in the Japanese prefectures of Aichi, Gifu and Shizuoka.
At the celebratory event, congratulations were offered by the Latvian Ambassador to Japan, Zigmārs Zilgalvis, the Head of the Japan-Latvia Parliamentary Friendship Group, Hirofumi Nakasone, and the Governor of the Aichi Prefecture, Hideaki Ōmura. The speakers emphasized the good bilateral relations between Latvia and Japan and the role of the Honorary Consulate in strengthening economic ties between the two countries.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Aichi Prefecture and the Nagoya City Administration, local business organizations and the press, totalling approximately 60 guests.
Nagoya is the fourth largest city in Japan and an important centre of innovation and industry. The port of Nagoya is one of the largest in Japan and handles more than 10% of the country’s international trade. The city is home to Toyota Motor Corporation and its affiliates.
There is also a Latvian Honorary Consulate in Osaka, which has been operating in Japan since 2008.
