On 17 July 2020, the acting State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jānis Mažeiks, met with the Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Moldova, Andrian Roşa, who had arrived on an accreditation visit. They discussed the bilateral relations between Latvia and Moldova and latest developments in the relations between the European Union (EU) and Moldova. The diplomats praised the cooperation of the two countries and committed themselves to a joint strengthening of that cooperation.

Ambassador Roşa noted that Latvia is an important partner in the EU, and Moldova highly appreciates support provided by Latvia. Adrian Roşa expressed his commitment to promoting and reinforcing Latvian-Moldovan relations in a number of fields, with a special focus on business, development cooperation, culture and building contacts at various levels.

Jānis Mažeiks pointed out that Moldova is one of the countries prioritised by Latvia in its development cooperation. The Under Secretary of State informed the Ambassador about Latvia’s contribution to support Moldova: three grant projects in the field of development cooperation were approved in June to mitigate the socio-economic consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. The total funding allocated to these projects is about 180 thousand euros.

The Under Secretary of State noted that Moldova is also an important member of the Eastern Partnership. Latvia supports Moldova’s efforts of moving closer to the EU. Jānis Mažeiks said that Latvia was prepared to continue sharing its reform experience with Moldova to strengthen cooperation between the EU and Moldova.

The Ambassador has presented a copy of his letter of credence at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The accreditation ceremony with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, has been scheduled for 21 July 2020.
