On November 30, 2023, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krišjānis Kariņš, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk, who has arrived in Latvia for a working visit. The Ministers discussed the burgeoning situation at the Polish-Ukrainian border, priority matters for the European Union, and the issues of bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Poland.
Krišjānis Kariņš emphasized that blockading of cargo transport at the Polish-Ukrainian border has been causing significant losses to the European Union Member States and Ukraine alike. The Latvian Foreign Minister repeatedly called on Poland to urgently find, in cooperation with Ukraine, a solution to increasing the speed of border crossing. The Polish Foreign Minister confirmed that efforts were being made to come up with a solution, and the situation would improve soon.
Ministers also discussed the need to launch, as soon as possible, the EU accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova and the integration of the two countries into the EU.
Krišjānis Kariņš commended the close bilateral relations and active political dialogue between Latvia and Poland. The Minister thanked Poland for its contribution to the strengthening of security in the region.
