On 30 and 31 March 2023, the Under Secretary, Political Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Andžejs Viļumsons, visited Kampala, Uganda. The visit included political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of Latvia and Uganda, as well as a number of meetings.
In the course of the consultations, Andžejs Viļumsons and the Director for Regional and International Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, Ambassador Elly Kamahungye Kafeero, discussed the possibilities for cooperation in forest management, vocational education, information and communication technologies and digitalisation, tourism and food processing. Another topic on the agenda was current global challenges, which would call for closer cooperation between Latvia and Uganda in international organisations. The discussions also addressed the development of civil society.
Andžejs Viļumsons drew attention to the threat posed by the Russian aggression against Ukraine to the international order and the global consequences of the invasion, including on the African continent.
The parties agreed to draw up a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a mechanism for political consultations in order to maintain a regular dialogue in the future.
During the visit, Andžejs Viļumsons also met with the Head of the EU Delegation to Uganda and the coordinator of the United Nations bodies and agencies.
