On 8 October 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted a decision to allocate financial resources to Moldova in the amount of EUR 50 000 from the “Contingency Funds” State Budget Programme in support of strengthening the resilience of Moldova’s energy system.
Latvia’s commitment to support the resilience of Moldova’s energy system is a message of solidarity to Moldovan society, which continues standing up to various external challenges while carrying out ambitious national reforms on its path to integration with the EU.
Moldova continues confronting security-related, social and economic challenges posed by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. With winter approaching, the resilience of the energy system is a matter of particular importance, given the need to provide sufficient and uninterrupted energy supplies to the population during the heating season.
Moldova is also facing large-scale attempts by Russia to influence the outcome of Moldova’s presidential election and referendum on EU accession by various means of hybrid interference, which include taking advantage of Moldova’s dependence on Russian energy supplies. Both votes are scheduled for this coming 20 October.
