In response to the decision taken by the President of the Russian Federation to recognise the independence of Luhansk and Donetsk, the territories outside the Ukrainian government’s control, the Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., of the Embassy of the Russian federation was summoned to a meeting with the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Andris Pelšs.
Condemnation was expressed in the strongest terms to the representative of Russia concerning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which is based on fabricated pretexts and misleading information. The decision passed by the President of Russia yesterday is a continuation of the attack on Ukraine’s statehood and territorial integrity which Russia began in 2014.
Andris Pelšs pointed out: “The steps taken by Russia are in a blatant violation of international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine; it is a violent change of borders. These actions have sparked off a harsh and broad international condemnation and will have serious and long-term consequences for Russia.”
While condemning Russia’s actions in the most resolute manner, Latvia underlines that the international community will respond firmly and take as strong as possible measures to put an end to Russia’s aggression and provide assistance to Ukraine. Latvia stands up for imposing robust economic sanctions on the Russian Federation and persons responsible for the attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty.
The State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed full support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
