On 8 September 2021, political consultations were held between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Georgia. At the consultations, Latvia was represented by the Secretary of State, Andris Pelšs, and Georgia, by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teimuraz Janjalia.
Andris Pelšs spoke with appreciation of the excellent bilateral cooperation, while underlining the need to enhance the successful political dialogue between Latvia and Georgia and to work towards the promotion of economic contacts of the two countries. The State Secretary commended the active parliamentary cooperation and the meeting of the Georgian delegation with the Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Committees of the Saeima (the Latvian Parliament).
The diplomats were in agreement that the Latvia-Georgia Intergovernmental Commission has a major role to play in building of a closer business cooperation. Teimuraz Janjalia confirmed that the Georgian side is prepared to host the next meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, the epidemiological situation permitting.
The officials of the two countries also discussed the relationship between the European Union (EU) and Georgia. Andris Pelšs reiterated Latvia’s support for the aspirations of Georgia to draw closer to the EU, while calling for continuation of reforms in the justice and electoral systems. The State Secretary confirmed that Latvia, by sharing its experience and expertise, will continue offering assistance to Georgia with its reform and eurointegration processes.
Other topics discussed during the consultations were the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit, cooperation between Latvia and Georgia in international organisations, and current regional security issues. The Georgian side welcomed the decision of the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers concerning the donation of 83,070 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and support provided in the framework of development cooperation policy.
