Latvijas un Azerbaidžānas karogi

On 14 February 2024, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Reinis Brusbārdis, met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Latvia, Elnur Sultanov.

During the conversation, the officials discussed topics on the bilateral agenda, including the planned exchanges of high-level visits, a dialogue between the Parliaments of the two countries, and the promotion of cooperation in various sectors. Wiews were also exchanged on matters currently on the table before the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the European Union-Azerbaijan dialogue, the situation in the South Caucasus, and the run of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP29 scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan from 11 through to 22  November this year.

Reinis Brusbārdis made note of the current constructive relations and the regular political dialogue between Latvia and Azerbaijan; he also confirmed Latvia’s readiness to promote the development of cooperation in various business sectors.

In the context of the dialogue between the European Union and Azerbaijan and the situation in the South Caucasus, Reinis Brusbārdis asserted Latvia’s strong support for the initiatives of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel and his efforts to promote a peaceful settlement of the Azerbaijan-Armenia dispute. The Parliamentary Secretary underlined the importance of a rapid conclusion of a peace agreement in order to ensure sustainable stability in the region.

The Parliamentary Secretary and the Ambassador also discussed the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference COP29 in Azerbaijan this autumn and the prospects for cooperation between Latvia and Azerbaijan in the energy sector, with a particular emphasis on the importance of using green energy.
