On 8 and 9 May 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs holds the annual training session for consular officers working at Latvian diplomatic and consular missions. This training event brings together 47 consular officers who currently are working at Latvian diplomatic missions abroad, or will be posted there this summer.
This year’s training event will focus attention on the European Parliament elections and holding them abroad, the risks of disinformation and the tools to prevent them. As usual, consular officers will expand their knowledge on taking action in a crisis and on crisis communication, as well as discussing cooperation with the State Police in the field of consular assistance. The training session will also address the functioning of the State Defence Service and joining the service by Latvian citizens residing abroad. The course also includes topics on the electronic accessibility of services provided by the state and in Latvian missions in foreign countries.
Lecturers at the training are both the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and experts from the Central Election Commission, the State Chancellery, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, the Ministry of Defence, and the State Police.
Annual training sessions for consular officers have been held since 1995. They have become a tradition that ensures effective sharing of information and experience among consular officials working both in Riga and abroad.
