On 29 January 2025, the Permanent Representation of Latvia to the European Union welcomed media representatives from Cabo Verde, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa for an informal exchange on countering foreign information manipulation and interference. Assistant Professor at Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, Solvita Denisa-Liepniece, and media expert Rita Ruduša shared Latvian experience of dealing with information manipulation. They singled out the important role of independent media and journalists in addressing this issue and emphasized the necessity of strengthening societal resilience to disinformation.
The Special Envoy on Digital Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Viktors Makarovs, gave an overview of Latvia’s foreign policy priorities, focussing on security, support for Ukraine, and safeguarding the rule-based international order. He also talked about Latvia’s candidacy for an elected seat on the UN Security Council in 2026-2027.
The session was part of a media visit for African journalists focusing on the challenges of disinformation organised by the European External Action Service.
