On 23 May 2022, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, took part in the meeting of the European Union’s General Affairs Council, which featured a discussion on preparations for the special meeting of the European Council on 30 and 31 May 2022. The European Council will address developments in Ukraine and the issues concerning energy and the EU’s security and defence policy.
At the meeting, the Foreign Minister expressed his opinion about the EU’s energy policy. He drew attention to the need for coming to an agreement about all the elements that would make it possible for the EU to diversify its energy supply routes and ensure energy supply for acceptable prices. Renewable energy and energy efficiency remain the cornerstone of the EU’s efforts to reduce energy dependence.
The sixth round of sanctions, which covers a Russian oil embargo, should be approved as soon as possible, Edgars Rinkēvičs said. With the war waged by Russia in Ukraine ongoing, a discussion should also be launched on the next round of restrictive measures on Russia and Belarus. The European Union’s investments towards energy access should be increased. The EU’s independence in terms of energy and renewable energy solutions must be further facilitated while looking for ways to reduce energy prices, Edgars Rinkēvičs noted.
