On 1 December 2021 in Riga, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, for a discussion on the bilateral relations between the two countries, including cooperation in economy, international organisations and NATO.
Edgars Rinkēvičs spoke with appreciation of the regular and open political dialogue between Latvia and Turkey, as well as cooperation in the defence sector. The Foreign Minister thanked Turkey for support it has expressed to Latvia and for its efforts to stem the flow of third country nationals to Belarus. Minister Rinkēvičs also called for a continued cooperation between the two countries seeking to restrict the flow of illegal migration towards the European Union – Belarus border. Cooperation between the EU and Turkey is a good example of how to address common challenges, Edgars Rinkēvičs underlined.
