On 30 November 2021 in Riga, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs, had a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Anniken Huitfeldt, for a discussion on bilateral relations, including cooperation in business, security, defence, and also in international organisations.

The Latvian Foreign Minister underlined that this year Latvia and Norway celebrate the centenary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations and 30 years since their restoration. In historical terms, support from Norway for Latvia’s independence aspirations and traditional cultural links have fostered Latvia’s democratic development. We highly appreciate cooperation between Latvia and Norway at the regional level, Edgars Rinkēvičs noted.

The Latvian Foreign Minister also noted that it was important to provide for the representation of NB8 at the United Nations Security Council so that issues essential for the region would be kept high on the Council’s agenda.

The Minister underlined during the meeting that the situation in the region is not improving and he mentioned examples for that – developments at the border between Latvia and Belarus, and Russia’s military build-up at the Ukrainian border. We welcome Norway’s contribution to ensuring of both NATO enhanced Forward Presence, and the Baltic Air Policing mission, Edgars Rinkēvičs underlined.
