On 16 May 2023, during the 4th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe in Reykjavík, Iceland, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Economic Cooperation and Telecommunications of San Marino, Luca Beccari, for a discussion on bilateral cooperation between the two countries and their cooperation in international organisations.
Edgars Rinkēvičs stated that Latvia was interested in improving and expanding the dialogue between the two countries. “Latvia and San Marino share the same values of peace, freedom, democracy and human rights. Respect for these values paves the way for closer cooperation between our countries. We are interested in working together in the field of science and new technologies,” the minister stressed.
Latvia's Foreign Minister thanked San Marino for its support for United Nations (UN) resolutions condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine. “The votes at the UN General Assembly clearly show strong international support to Ukraine. However, joint efforts in multilateral fora must continue. Ukraine will need our support in advancing initiatives at the United Nations to hold Russia accountable for crimes of aggression against Ukraine,” the Minister said.
During the meeting, the officials also discussed progress in negotiations on the Association Agreement between the European Union and San Marino.
